The Bags were one of the first generation of punk rock bands to emerge from Los Angeles. They met in 1976 while waiting in line to see Elton John. The Bags took the band’s name and their stage names (all surnamed “Bag”) from a gimmick that the band used during early performances where they performed with grocery bags over their heads. In 1978, they released their only record, a single called “Survive”, backed with “Babylonian Gorgon”, released by independent record label Dangerhouse Records.
In 1980 the group was filmed by Penelope Spheeris (who went on to direct “Wayne’s World” a decade later) for the documentary film “The Decline Of Western Civilization”, which also featured Black Flag, X, Germs and other L.A. punk bands. At the release of the film in 1981 the producers billed the group as “Alice Bag Band” to avoid any conflict with ex-member Pat, but the band had already broken up by then.
For sale here is a copy of the 2016 reissue of “Survive”, in mint condition. Comes in a foldover sleeve, and all the iconic artwork is faithfully restored from the 1978 original. Great pressing, sounds fabulous.
