Compulsion

One of the boldest statements in the Andrew Hill discography, 1965’s “Compulsion”, was the pianist’s expression of the avant-garde through the prism of jazz music’s roots in African rhythms. Hill’s percussive piano drives an intrepid ensemble through four evocative originals – “Compulsion,” “Legacy,” “Premonition,” and “Limbo” – given deeply engaged performances by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, saxophonist John Gilmore, bassists Cecil McBee and Richard Davis, drummer Joe Chambers, and percussionists Nedi Qamar and Renaud Simmons.

Blue Note’s Tone Poet Series represents the pinnacle of jazz reissues for anyone who appreciates pristine audio. Mastered by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) from the original analog master tapes. Pressed on 180-grams audiophile vinyl at RTI and presented in deluxe tip-on jackets.
