Rhinestone

“Rhinestone” is a 1984 film starring Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton. Stallone was chosen to star in “Rhinestone” alongside Dolly after Fox pushed for him, but he became heavily involved in rewriting the screenplay, changing the original story and making his character more prominent. Fox executives disliked many of his changes and brought back original writer Phil Alden Robinson to restore the script, but Stallone continued revising it during production.

The filming itself also was troubled: director Don Zimmerman clashed with Stallone and was fired after three weeks, with Bob Clark replacing him and the first weeks of footage discarded. Stallone continued to influence the script and production, while Robinson became so unhappy with the changes that he briefly considered removing his own name from the film. Years later, Stallone said he regretted making the film, although he remembered working with Dolly Parton fondly.

Dolly Parton stated in her 1994 autobiography that she regards the soundtrack album as some of the best work she’s done, even though the film was largely regarded as a critical and commercial flop.
