Bonnie “Prince” Billy

A cassette with a story: Will Oldham handled virtually every aspect of this release himself — from writing, recording and artwork to the physical release and distribution. Frustrated by the direction the record industry was taking as labels increasingly embraced streaming, he set out on his own, turning the cassette into an experiment in total independence.

There was no conventional label campaign, no major distribution network. The tapes were reportedly delivered personally to independent record stores in Kentucky, with Oldham himself handling the distribution. At the time (2013), this cassette was the only way to hear these songs. We managed to find a copy, and remarkably, it’s as good as new. An unusual piece of Bonnie “Prince” Billy history, and a nice little artifact with beautiful songs on it.
