"The Shape Of Punk To Come" is a landmark in hardcore, pushing the genre forward and still sounding fresh almost 30 years later. It was Refused's third album, originally released in 1998 through Burning Heart.

The album marked a sharp and conscious departure from Refused's earlier work. The philosophy of the album, expounded in the ample liner notes and encapsulated in the song "New Noise", was that punk and hardcore music could not be anti-establishment by continuing to package revolutionary lyrics in sounds which had been increasingly co-opted into the mainstream. The sound of the record challenged existing punk sensibilities: it can be seen as punk at a fundamental level, and includes experimental combinations of post-hardcore, post-punk, metal, rock, techno and jazz.

Pere Ubu's mighty debut recorded back in 1977 and originally released on Blank Records in 1978. It is hard to believe that such noises could come from so deep in America's heartland, played by a group named after a French absurdist play. The debut album by Pere Ubu, "The Modern Dance", is the realization of group leader David Thomas's high-concept vision of a rock band whose sound was always just on the verge of falling apart. Avant garde and not terribly accessible, the album's noisy anarchy was a tonic for punks and intellectuals sick of the bloated, corporate sound that passed for commercial rock at the time. It became a major influence on the leading alternative bands of the following decade, including the Pixies and Hüsker Dü.

"The Modern Dance" has been critically acclaimed. Rolling Stone called it "vivid and exhilarating, even if harsh and willfully ugly". NME named "The Modern Dance" the 11th best album of 1978. Fact placed the record at number 31 on its list of the 100 best albums of the 1970's.

This is the 2013 reissue by Music On Vinyl, with a unique light grey cover instead of black. Used but in great shape!

Berlin-based Swedish saxophonist Otis Sandsjö returns with the eagerly-awaited sequel to "Y-OTIS". On "Y-OTIS 2", Sandsjö and his close associate Petter Eldh deepen their vision of genre-bending, forward-looking "liquid jazz" of tomorrow. The core group also includes Dan Nicholls on keys and Tilo Weber on drums, and also featured on the album are Swedish jazz greats Jonas Kullhammar and Per "Texas" Johansson, cellist Lucy Railton and trumpeter Ruhi-Deniz Erdogan.

Omtrent Een Componistenactie

Excellent LP from Misha Mengelberg released in 1982 and containing three completely different pieces.

"Musica Per 17 Instrumenti" is fantastic, in particular because of the presence of conductor Reinbert de Leeuw leading the Ensemble of the Royal Conservatory of the Hague. De Leeuw is a top-notch classical leader who has more than earned his stripes on the Dutch music scene. A sizeable chunk of his reputation is based on his work with the Satie repertoire, so he is the perfect person to bring out the little gems of melodic genius, fascinating use of space, and tender elements of refined ensemble nuance that are attributes of the work of both the French and Dutch musical geniuses. A major difference, of course, is Mengelberg's jazz background, motley influences present from the varied styles that are gathered together under this genre umbrella.

"3 Intermezzi" is a bit from the far out jazz side of things, Mengelberg showing a knack for writing out events that might otherwise be improvised by free jazz players. Yet this type of playing sounds different when done by members of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, obviously.

The side-long "Omtrent Een Componistenactie" is well worth a listen, a finely honed set of instrumental transactions that will be especially appealing to lovers of the oboe and bassoon.

Sonic Youth’s self-released avant garde series was named in homage to the original “Perspectives Musicales” series. However Sonic Youth used a different translation of the series name on each successive release, matching the language used for other text on the release. This is the French-themed release on coloured vinyl, with some great improvisations on it.

"Sax Maniac" is a 1982 album by New York jazz-punk band James White And The Blacks, fronted by James Chance under his James White pseudonym. A key figure in no wave, Chance has been playing a combination of improvisational jazz-like music and punk in the New York music scene since the late 1970's, in such bands as Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, and The Contortions. The album was originally released on Chris Stein's Animal Records label and dedicated to Anya Philips. This an early 2000's reissue on superheavy 220-grams vinyl featuring three bonus tracks recorded in 1988.

"Simon Werner A Disparu" (English title: "Lights Out") is a French thriller film directed by Fabrice Gobert. The soundtrack was written and performed by Sonic Youth. It was released as part of the Sonic Youth Recordings series, and is notable for being the last release of new music from the band prior to their indefinite hiatus which was announced in 2012.

The soundtrack LP also includes the film itself on DVD!

Getatchew Mekuria is the most revered veteran of the Ethiopian saxophone. He is a real giant, both physically and musically. In his seventies, he is still in full voice, with his own, powerfully distinctive style of playing. The Ex invited him to play with the ICP at the 25th years anniversary party and the Convoy tour. Getatchew saw The Ex and also wanted to play with them. He was so inspired that he suggested to The Ex he should record his next album with them. He gave them ten solo saxophone versions of Ethiopian tunes. The beginning of a very successful cooperation!
